As it cools, the glass transitions from a viscous liquid in a plastic state to a brittle solid. The shaping techniques can be categorized into two main types: hand forming and machine forming.
 
Annealing:

The glass will change shape during the molding process due to the high temperatures which cause thermal stress. The thermal stress in the glass reduces its strength and thermal stability.

When you directly cool the glass, it will tend to crack during the cooling or when you transport, store and use the product. To avoid a cold-burst, glass must be annealed. The glass is annealed to reduce thermal stress.
